How to choose your leather scraps
It all depends on your project and the appropriate thickness for its intended use. For soft leather goods (pouches, wallets), choose nappa calf leather scraps in 1.0 to 1.5 mm — they are thin, supple and easy to work with. Full-grain scraps offer a natural and highly durable surface. For more structured items (rigid card holders, small cases), cowhide scraps in 1.5 to 2.5 mm provide better rigidity. Nubuck scraps, with their soft and velvety texture, are perfect for decorative creations.

Scraps sold in bulk by weight are pieces of varying sizes, resulting from hide cutting. They typically range from a few centimetres up to pieces measuring 20 to 30 cm per side, depending on the product range. If you require a guaranteed minimum size, you can contact us so we can check dimensions before shipping.
Are leather scraps good quality?
Yes. Our scraps come from premium hides sourced from French luxury houses and renowned tanneries. These are offcuts, not damaged leather: the quality of the leather remains the same, only the size of the piece differs. For second-choice bulk lots, you may find more visible natural marks (mainly creases), without affecting strength or dye absorption.
Can leather scraps be dyed?
Yes, especially natural vegetable-tanned cowhide scraps, which absorb alcohol-based dyes such as the Fiebing’s range very well. These scraps have an aniline finish, so water-based dyes will not work properly on them.
Are leather scraps suitable for beginners?
Absolutely — they are even our number one recommendation for beginners. They allow you to practice basic techniques (cutting, folding, gluing, stitching, dyeing) using essential leathercraft tools, and provide an affordable way to learn without wasting material.
