Frequently Asked Questions About Leather Hardware & Accessories
How do I choose the right belt buckle size?
The buckle width must exactly match the width of your leather strap or belt. For a standard 30 mm belt, choose a 30 mm buckle. Always measure your strap before ordering. The same rule applies to dog collars: the buckle width should match the strap width.
Which finish should I choose for my metal hardware?
Nickel-plated hardware offers a bright, contemporary appearance, making it ideal for modern leather goods. Antique brass provides a warm, handcrafted look, perfect for vintage, western, or premium creations. Matte black delivers a timeless, understated finish and is particularly popular for fashion accessories and dog collars. For a cohesive design, use the same finish across all the hardware on a single project.
How do I install a double cap rivet?
First, punch a hole in the leather using the correct-sized leather punch. Insert the rivet post through the leather from the back, place the cap on top, then set the rivet using the appropriate rivet setter and an anvil until the post flares securely inside the cap. One firm, centred strike is usually enough. You'll find all the necessary installation tools in our leatherworking tool range.
Snap Fastener or Chicago Screw — Which Should I Choose?
A snap fastener provides quick, convenient opening and closing with a simple press, making it ideal for wallets, card holders, pouches, and everyday bags. A Chicago screw creates a removable, reusable assembly and is better suited to projects you may wish to modify later, such as notebooks, modular wallets, or adjustable leather accessories. Both require dedicated installation tools for proper fitting.
