- Colored bend — same density as natural bend, available in various colors (London brown, gypsy blue, emerald green…) for projects combining strength and aesthetics.
- Natural half cowhide — the preferred choice for structured leather goods, carving, and large surface projects. Available in 1.4/1.6 and 2.2/2.4 mm.
- Natural lambskin — thin and supple, perfect for bookbinding, leather covering, and linings. Easily dyed with Fiebing’s dyes.
- Butt (croupon) — the central part of the hide, the most uniform in thickness and density.
- Vegetable-tanned goat leather — lighter than cowhide, with a distinctive natural grain. Ideal for fine bookbinding and decorative creations.

How to work with vegetable-tanned leather
Natural (undyed) vegetable leather can be dampened with water to make it more pliable and suitable for shaping or carving. Once dry, it permanently retains the formed shape. For dyeing, alcohol-based dyes such as Fiebing’s Leather Dye or Pro Oil Dye penetrate deeply for a rich and long-lasting finish. Always finish with a protective coating to preserve color and waterproof the surface.

What is the difference between vegetable leather and natural leather?
Vegetable-tanned leather refers to the manufacturing process — tannins used are plant-based. Natural leather refers to vegetable-tanned leather that has received no dye or finishing after tanning, preserving its natural color. All natural leathers are vegetable-tanned, but not all vegetable-tanned leathers are natural — some are dyed or colored after tanning.
Is vegetable leather suitable for carving and embossing?
Yes, it is even the only material that allows carving and embossing. When dampened with water, vegetable leather becomes pliable and takes stamp impressions with precision. Once dry, it permanently retains the created reliefs. Chrome-tanned leather does not allow this technique.
Does vegetable leather dye easily?
Yes. Without surface finishing, natural vegetable leather absorbs alcohol-based dyes very well (Fiebing’s Leather Dye, Pro Oil Dye). Lightly dampen the surface before applying dye for better penetration and an even finish. Always finish with a coat of Resolene to seal and protect.
